Blog Dare 2012 Day 31

Today's Topic: A Few Ways I Can Help Someone Else This Year..

I have been thinking about this a lot lately.  I am not working and would love to get more involved in the community.

I have been tossing around {and praying like crazy about it} and I really feel like I need to do something... but what?

I have two ideas that I am thinking about doing {maybe both?}

  1. Our church partners with a local food pantry that serves dinner to families in need.  They do things a little bit differently though... instead of serving food in a cafeteria style fashion, their volunteers actually SERVE {restaurant style} the families that come!!  I love this!!!
  2. I had mentioned in my bucket list post, I really would like to volunteer at Safe Haven Ministries.  Safe Haven Ministries offers confidential emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence, support groups, individual counseling, and advocacy for women and children who do not require shelter, and prevention and outreach programs for the entire community.  I have a strong feelings on this subject and would love to learn more and help more.
Domestic abuse is more than a family issue, it's a community issue.

*On average, more than three women A DAY are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the US!

*One in three adolescent girls in the US are victim of abuse from a dating partner.  This figure FAR exceeds victimization rates for other types of violence affecting teens.

*275 million children worldwide are exposed to violence in the home.

14 Days of Love: Day 1

Day 1 is finally here...well tomorrow! Cousin came over to visit with my husband, so well they were in the "man cave"{yes he has his own man cave...I am so jealous!I figured that'd be a good time to bake his cookies!!  He has a HUGE sweet tooth, and if he smells me baking them later, he'll eat them all!!

I decided to make husband cookies for the Day 1!

So here's what I used:
I found this adorable gift tag here!

Cherry Chip cake mix, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of oil and valentines cookie cutters

Directions:
First I placed eggs and oil in a mixing bowl {for some reason if I do it in the other order, my mixer THROWS the eggs all over the place- not fun!}, then place cake mix in.  Mix for about one minute.

*After it's mixed, it's going to be thick, not like a cake mix!

Next
use your cookie cutter to cut out shapes.  I found it easiest to only do a spoon full at a time, less messy... but that's up to you!
Now back at 350 for 8 minutes!

decided to do 'X' & 'O' ones too!

I found super cute boxes at dollar tree last year and had to get them {two for $1!!} so I am using those for the packaging.

In The News...

Just seen this news article... as I've said before {in this post} cancer topics tend to pull on my heart stings... especially when they have happy endings like this one and then something bad happens...

How about I just tell you the story already!?  The Detroit News reported that 17 year old J.T. Gaskins was diagnosed with cancer at just 2 months old and has been in remission since he was 7 years old.  Gaskins was inspired after a friends sister was diagnosed with cancer, to grow his hair out and donate it to Locks of Love.

Locks of love requires your hair be at least 10 inches long to donate, and right now J.T.'s is only  2.5 inches long.... not a big deal right?

Wrong, his school has suspended him, because of his hair, and refuses to let him back until he cuts it.  J.T. goes to Madison Academy, which is tuition free public school here in Michigan, the problem is that in their handbook it requires that boys hair is kept "clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes."
photo taken from petition

Although I understand the school wanting strict rules on the appearance of their kids {I think my sons does too} his hair really isn't that bad.  The only rule it broke is that it's over the ears.    J.T. is not complaining so much that they suspended him, he feels that there should be "clauses" put in place for boys who want to grow their hair our for purposes such as Locks of Love.

His family has started an online petition: which you can view/sign here.  They have 42,396 of 50,000 signatures already!

Bubble Wrap Anyone!?

So I just heard on the radio that today is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day! That's awesome, I love bubble wrap!

The Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day started in 2001 one by "Spirit 95" FM Radio Station, and actually holds annual events like bubble wrap popping relays and bubble wrap sculpting!!  Bubble Wrap Appreciation day is held on the last Monday in January every year.

Bubble Wrap Fact: Two New Jersey engineers invented Bubble Wrap in 1957. Originally, they were trying to make a plastic wallpaper with a paper backing. When idea didn't work, the product transformed into a cushioning packaging material.

Read more here: http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2012/01/30/1913261/bubble-wrap-appreciation-day-2012.html#storylink=cpy

Bummed because bubble wrap is not something you keep on hand, but want to pop some now?!  It's not quite the same, but I did find the Bubble Wrap Game... if you like popping bubbles, you'll have to check it out!!  You can select the size and color of your bubbles!!!

Are You Up For The Challenge?

Today's Topic: What I want for my birthday...

Which is too funny since my birthday was yesterday! haha!

I had the BEST birthday yesterday!!  The boys were so good and so excited that it was my birthday!  We went to my parents house during the day because the boys made me a present and had it over there for me.  {my beautiful necklace}.

I found this awesome idea on A Lil Dash of Diva's blog recently:

and HAD to try it!!!  My sister seen me pinning pictures that I wanted to try and beat me too it and gave it to me for my b-day:

My 3 year old loves it!  He carried it around all morning looking at it until I hung it up!

I wanted green's/browns because my dining room is dark green, and my bedroom is brown, wasn't sure where I was going to put it at first,  but found the best spot in the dining room for it... right above the boys coat rack/shoe area!!

Making Money Online #3

Photobucket

  A friend of my just recently told me about a company she uses to make money online.

If you remember, I've posted two other times (part 1 & part 2 } about companies that I personally use to make money online, and my experience with them this far.  So I decided to try it out!  I figured the worst that could happen would be that I don't make any money!

Calyp is an endorsement program and pays similar to affiliate programs {like amazon and ebay} and adsense...which I also participate in.  It pays per click,  but you don't have to place ads on your blog to earn money {which can get annoying to readers!}

How it works: Calyp has different levels of their memebers.  The higher the member, the more you get paid!

You start off as a Preferred Member-preferred members aren't paid for the ads that they post, but the more often you post, the sooner you get to the GOLD membership, where you earn $.  Once you've earned 29,999 points {which are actually really easy to earn!} then you move up to the next level.

Preferred member earnings:
  • 20,000 pts – just for signing up
  • 100 pts – per campaign "click-thru"
  • 250 pts – for endorsing a campaign
  • 200 pts – per campaign call to action "click-thru"
  • 25 pts – per Calyp by text
  • 200 pts – per successful friend referral
  • 150 pts – per Calyp by social media post
  • 20 pts – per campaign rating

Gold Member: Gold members earn 10 cents for every ad that they post {you can post on facebook, twitter, linkedin and your blog} and 5cents every time someone clicks on that ad.

Platinum Member: earn 15cents for every ad that you post, and 8cents for each click to that ad.

Elite Member: is the highest.  You earn 20cents for each ad you post and 10cents for each click.

I have earned $5 so far just today!!!  If you interested in joining, PLEASE e-mail me {bloggermom@betterdips.com} or leave a comment with your e-mail address and I can give you a few more pointers that I don't feel comfortable posting here BUT that have been VERY helpful in earning the most I can using CALYP!

It's my birthday today...My boys insisted on going to Grandma & Grandpa's house because they said my present was there... turns out they were right!  They made me this beautiful necklace for my birthday!  They are so sweet and were sooooo excited to give it to me!  It's my favorite present!

My second favorite is this awesome apron!!  I LOVE owls, and have wanted an apron for a long time... so my mom made me one!!!

Blog Dare 2012 Day 28

Today's Topic: I write for {why I write a blog}

I enjoy writing.  I have had a personal blog for a long time and I love the connections that I've made.  I had been feeling for awhile that I wanted to do something more with a blog then just as my personal journal...

I love sharing stories I've heard about or crafts that I have found to do with the boys.  And I love even more hearing your thoughts or even reading that you've tried the crafts I've found!

If I ever post about something and it makes you think of something else, SHARE IT!  If it's sparked you to come up with your own post, I'd love for you to share the link here in my comments so I can see it!!

Manners Anyone?

I was recently reading an old {March 2011} issue of Parent Magazine, and found a list of 25 manners every child should know by age 9.  I thought this list was great...I can think of a few adults that could use a refresher  on this list as well!

25 Manners Every Child Should Know By Age 9:
 Manner #1
When asking for something, say “Please.”

Manner #2
When receiving something, say “Thank you.”

Manner #3
Do not interrupt grown-ups who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking

{my oldest is having a VERY hard time with this one!}

Manner #4
If you do need to get somebody’s attention right away, the phrase “excuse me” is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation.

Manner #5
When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. It can save you from many hours of grief later.

Manner #6
The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends, and out of earshot of adults.

{not sure how I really feel about this one..I encourage my boys to talk to me about everything}

Manner #7
Do not comment on other people’s physical characteristics unless, of course, it’s to compliment them, which is always welcome.

Manner #8
When people ask you how you are, tell them and then ask them how they are.

{after working in customer service, I've realized MANY adults don't know how to do this!!}

Manner #9
When you have spent time at your friend’s house, remember to thank his or her parents for having you over and for the good time you had.

Manner #10
Knock on closed doors — and wait to see if there’s a response — before entering.

Manner #11
When you make a phone call, introduce yourself first and then ask if you can speak with the person you are calling.

Manner #12
Be appreciative and say “thank you” for any gift you receive. In the age of e-mail, a handwritten thank-you note can have a powerful effect.

Manner #13
Never use foul language in front of adults. Grown-ups already know all those words, and they find them boring and unpleasant.

Manner #14
Don’t call people mean names.

Manner #15
Do not make fun of anyone for any reason. Teasing shows others you are weak, and ganging up on someone else is cruel.

Manner #16
Even if a play or an assembly is boring, sit through it quietly and pretend that you are interested. The performers and presenters are doing their best.

Manner #17
If you bump into somebody, immediately say “Excuse me.”

Manner #18
Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and don’t pick your nose in public.

Manner #19
As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else.

Manner #20
If you come across a parent, a teacher, or a neighbor working on something, ask if you can help. If they say “yes,” do so — you may learn something new.

Manner #21
When an adult asks you for a favor, do it without grumbling and with a smile.

{yup...they don't do this!!}

Manner #22
When someone helps you, say “thank you.” That person will likely want to help you again. This is especially true with teachers!

Manner #23
Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure how to do so, ask your parents to teach you or watch what adults do.

Manner #24
Keep a napkin on your lap; use it to wipe your mouth when necessary.

Manner #25
Don’t reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed.

What do you think about this list?

Classy or Trashy

Welcome to my all new Classy OR Trashy (formally known as cute or creepy)!!!

I know this is slightly "old news"... but I've been waiting to post it until the controversy died down some.  As I'm sure most know by now,  Michelle Duggar suffered a miscarriage recently (december 2011).     I guess some pictures that the Duggars took were released over the internet shortly after:

Many are saying that it's just another way for the Duggars to "exploit" the baby.

What do you think are their actions Classy OR Trashy??

You don't know me... the real me.  The one that is insecure in her body, the one who has lied, the one who sometimes feels alone, the one who once was broken, the one who felt lost, the one was guilty, the one who felt like a nobody, the old me.

Now I am...beloved, reborn, forgiven, free, found, desired, restored...set free!

Do you want a FREE $10?

I just heard about Vitacost.com, I'm not big on buying health and wellness stuff online, but they lured me in with a free $10!!  I don't really need anything but after doing my Friday's Favorites post, I was thinking "what if I lose the ONE thing of lip balm I have!?" and decided since they were giving me a free $10 I'd stock up on it!!

After looking around, I found out that they offer way more then vitamins, they actually offer a whole bunch of different stuff, like baby products!!

Here's the best part, if you use my referral link, you get $10 and so do I!!!

The only down side is that the $10 doesn't cover shipping.  Their standard shipping is only $4.99 though so not too bad.  Just make sure that you're at least getting over $4.99 worth of product for that $10!  {so me buying two things of lip balm isn't worth it, but if I buy four, it is, since they are normally almost $4 each!}

*This is NOT a sponsored post.  If you sign up using the referral link we WILL both get $10 FREE!*

Times have changed...

Times really have changed, and sometimes I think I just need to accept that and move on...but not until after this post!

Scenario 1: My "cousin" {husband's cousins girlfriend, got that?} had baby #1 shortly after I did, I went to her baby shower and bought her a super nice gift, etc.  Fast forward another couple of years, I have baby #2, a year later so does she.  I get another invite to another shower!

Do you see anything wrong with that?  I did.  I didn't go to her shower, and I told her that I wasn't going because I didn't feel it was right she was having a second shower.  She wasn't married, she chose to get pregnant {she actually did, she was trying to get pregnant} and I feel like if you can't afford to buy the things you need then you shouldn't TRY to get pregnant and ask other people for gifts.  It never used to work this way.  A baby shower was a celebration in which guests would come and SHOWER the mother with gifts.  IF you don't want/expect gifts but want to celebrate, call it something else!  Like a baby celebration.

Did you know there are actually terms for celebrations for 2nd (or more) children?  There's a  Diaper shower which is a small-scale baby shower, generally for subsequent children, when the parents don't need as many baby supplies.  There's also a Sprinkles {a baby sprinkles?} which are also small showers for a subsequent child who is of a different gender than the previous offspring. They are actually becoming much more common!  WHY is it that I would be ok with going to either of the above listed celebrations for a 2nd (or more)baby, but not a baby shower?

Scenario 2:Recently my sister in law {A} asked if I would throw her baby shower for her.  She is pregnant with her THIRD child!  My other sister in law {B} is pregnant with her second child, and is having something like 3-4 baby showers..? and wants me to go to ALL of them!!!

  • Now sister in law {A} didn't have any showers for her other kids because she wasn't married at the time and said she just didn't have many friends or family around to come. She said she just wants to have a small party with friends and family around and is going to announce the sex of the baby AT the party {I'm thinking this is really more of a diaper or sprinkles party than a shower?  She's not registering or asking for gifts}
  • BUT sister in law {B} has registered and is asking for gifts, she is having the same sex baby she had before and still has all his clothes, but is asking for bigger ticket items like cribs and such.
I want to be supportive of both sisters because I AM excited about the new babies in the family I will get to spoil... so I feel like I should bite my tongue and just go to one of the showers for sister in law {B}... but that's just not how I am...

 What do you think about baby SHOWERS for 2nd {or more} babies?

*post credits: photos taken from google search; baby shower information taken from various sites such as wikipedia and about.com through a google search.

::Flashback Fridays::

I've been trying to limit the blog hops that I do and only have one or two that I do each week...gives more time for me to focus on other content on here =)  BUT I came across this one today and I have to do it!!!  I love my pictures, gives me a reason to go through old ones! {warning, I can get carried away when it comes to my pictures!!  I will try to control myself!}

::Flashback Friday::

This is probably one of my favorite pics ever of the two of them!  That's my oldest and hubby @ the beach {summer of 2008!}

I did good today... it's hard though!  Especially since I haven't seen some of these pics in a long time!

Friday's Favorites Bee Merry Lip Balm

A couple of weeks ago I was checking the mail and there was a surprise package in there!!  Before Christmas I played {and won} the Burt's Bees "Bee Merry and Bright" game on Facebook  I was so excited that I won, I've been wanting to try their stuff, but I'm too cheap =)

I had pretty much given up on them ever sending it to me and then it finally came!  Just in time too, because my lips were getting BAD!  I'm surprised husband would even kiss me they felt that bad!

So I ripped open the package and put it on right away!  {Now lets back up a second, I am SO picky about my chapstick.  When my lips get bad, I usually get blistex because it has that awesome cooling sensation that makes me feel comforted, like it's actually working} I was shocked when I started getting that tingly, cooling feeling on my lips!  I was not expecting that from this lip balm at all!

I've been using it almost daily since I got it, and my lips have felt so great!  They haven't gotten sore from the cold weather at all!  And whats even more amazing is that I have managed to NOT wash the tube of chapstick {maybe it's magical?}

I haven't tried any other kinds, but the Bee Merry lip blam is awesome... of course, my luck in finding it again until next Christmas is probably slim!  Lets hope I can NOT wash or lose it until then!

Finding New Friends Blog Hop!

Toddler TIme

Today, I was on the computer and my 3 year old was being really whiny. We were at my parents house waiting for my oldest to get out of school and normally he ditches me completely while we're there, so that's my computer time until after they are in bed... well he wasn't doing that today

 So I finally gave up, threw the blanket we had on our laps over our heads and yelled "OMG WYATTT!!!! There's a bear in this cave do you see it!?  Quick, what do bears eat!?"  He looked at me like I was nuts, then said "OHH they eat grass and dirt! I have some right here!{pretended to pull it from his pocket}"  I said "Bears don't eat that, now he's mad!!  He's going to get us!  Do you have any big fish? They like fish!"....this went on for a good 15 minutes, after the bears {yes another one came to get us!} went away a dragon came, lol.

I love encouraging my kids to use their imagination... they don't need a computer game or TV to have fun!  We did end up getting on youtube after we were done playing and watched the video below, which he now LOVES!  He asked me to play it over and over again.  We did all the hand motions and even got up and jogged in place in some parts!  I think his favorite part was the eyes towards the end =)

If you're looking for a fun activity to do with your kids this week, I am going to suggest heading on over to I'd Rather Be Changing Diapers and view my guest post on her page for a super fun lunch/dinner idea!  Or check out my Sock Puppet Saturday for a fun craft idea!!

In The News...

Yesterday Kim shared with me this link, and I thought it really needed to be shared with everyone!

A mother is suing her obstetrician because she was misdiagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy in 2006.  After having multiple miscarriages, and finally getting a positive pregnancy test, she went to her doctor who told her that her pregnancy was ectopic {also known as a tubal pregnancy because the egg is not in the uterus but the fallopian tube} so the doctor suggested she take a shot of methotrexate (a chemotherapy drug) that would terminate the pregnancy but still be safe for her and her uterus.  The mother had other kids at home and thought it was best to take it {ectopic pregnancy are life threatening if not caught in time!}.  Two weeks later, after having a bad nightmare about a baby crying for her help, she went back to the doctor and asked for a second opinion, and was surprised {as were the ultrasound techs!} to find that she was still in fact pregnant and the baby was NOT in the fallopian tube but in her uterus!

Photo from google search
Sadly this misdiagnosis has happened before, but a lot of times the parents choose to terminate the pregnancy, and for the parents that did not choose to, the babies did not make it to full term... but the mother that is suing... well her baby did make it full term!  And came out healthy and with limited defects, or so they thought!  When the nurse went to take the babies temperature, they found that she had no rectum, uterus or vagina! And that she has some spinal cord problems .  The little girl is now healthy and 5 years old, but will still always have problems, and will never be able to have kids!

Researchers have studied the effects of methotrexate on 8 misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancies {the story listed above was not included in this study} and was reported in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology  Three pregnancies ended in miscarriage within two weeks of receiving the injection; Three were surgically removed after the mothers had been warned of the risks of defects; Of the remaining two, one was still born at 30 weeks and one was born with severe defects at 37 weeks.

Blog Dare 2012: Day 26

a mom blog community

Today's Topic: Annoying Myths or wives tales..

Honestly, ANY of the wives tales about pregnancy/the sex of your baby, etc, are soooo annoying!!  And everyone chimes in with them, all.the.time!!

Every single time I had a doctors appt with either of the boys, I'd hear "oh whats the heart beat? must be a girl because my daughters was that!" or "Your carrying low, must be a boy!"  Especially with my 5 year old because we didn't find out the sex beforehand!
I remember all those things that I hated when I was pregnant,  and I am MAKING SURE not to do them with my two pregnant sister in laws!  I don't want to be the annoying one in the family when it comes to their pregnancies, I want them to come to me with stuff, and if I don't know something, I just leave it alone, I don't chime in with any old wives tales!!

We Want To Know...

Photobucket

Just found this awesome linky Hosted by MamarazziQueso and Crazymama!

Here are the questions for this week:
{1} What is your favorite room in your house and why? Bonus points for a picture.
Our living room!  That's where I spend most of my time.  Until recently, that's where my desk and computer were as well, but I just moved them out to give more room in there.

{2} What is your favorite time of day and why?
Night time!!  That's when the kids are in bed and it's so peaceful and quite.  I get to relax and watch tv or get online

{3} What is your favorite genre of music (or band/singer) and why?
I have always been very open and listen to just about anything, but the main thing that's on in the car is a country music or Christian music station

{4} What is your favorite "go to" snack? Is it something you keep on hand?
BEFORE I decided to go on a diet it would have been chips or cookies, but now I always make sure to have pickles {I'm a doing a weight watchers type diet and they are 0 points} and 100 cal snack packs- the chocolate covered pretzels for when I am craving chocolate!

Also, GUM has been a big MUST HAVE, when I am making the boys food/snacks, I make sure to throw a piece in my mouth so I am not tempted to try it!

{5} What is your favorite form of exercise or way to keep moving?
I love going for walks.  Our new house has presented a challenge-no sidewalks!  And the road gets really curvy, so I'm afraid to walk around there, so lately it's been biking {I have one of these bike stands in my living room}
